Exhibition Introduction

Lung Ying-tsung was an important and prolific writer during the Japanese Rule. With his creative journey spanning across the Japanese period and the post-war nationalist era, Lung had produced quite a few works in both Japanese and Chinese in his life. This made him a crucial literary figure of the "cross-language" generation. Lung was good at depicting intellectuals struggling between frustrations and ideals in a colonial setting. His works are therefore full of hopelessness and solitude as if they had a pale color. Amidst the words is unspoken sorrow, reflecting the alienated and profound states of "small people" in "big times." Yeh Shih-tao once commented, "It was until Lung Ying-tsung joined the writers' community that depictions of one's frustrations and philosophies, as well as a strong sense of humanism, appeared in Taiwan's novels." The Taiwanese writers of the Japanese Rule had a diversity of family backgrounds. Lai Ho, Chang Wen-huan, Lu Ho-juo and Wu Chuo-liu, among others, did not seem to have similar life experiences as described in Lung's works. That is, Hakka people tended to suffer from uncertainty and change as they were forced to move and spread.

Lung Ying-tsung and his family had carefully arranged and reserved books and cultural objects before handing them over to the National Museum of Taiwan Literature. These include literary magazines, books, manuscripts, photographs, daily wares and newspaper clippings, totaling more than a thousand items. Taking "A Small Town with Papaya Trees" as the starting point, this exhibition introduces subject matters such as Hakka identity and a "cross-language" generation to show traces of Lung Ying-tsung's life and his creative writings. Spectators are encoraged to learn about this energetic writer and his times.
