NMTL is partnering with several representative offices in Taiwan to hold the United Nations of Stories series of activities. On selected Saturdays between April 20th and October 26th, stories introducing the sports cultures of different countries will be told, reflecting the theme of “the many faces of sports.” Teachers from Taiwan, the US, Argentina, Canada, St. Lucia, France, Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, Ukraine, and elsewhere will read books from their native countries and lead children in reading and learning about competitive sports from around the world.

This special exhibition builds upon the history of Tainan to present how Taiwan emerged onto the world scene. One key historical figure, Zheng Jing, achieved a state of coexistence with external powers such as the Dutch and the Qing Dynasty through the skillful use of negotiation letters. How did this ruler of trade and commerce, and navigator of ethnic conflict, economic competition, and changing times defend his territory amid constant warfare? As Tainan evolved and witnessed centuries pass by, how did its scholars and writers absorb and integrate literary trends both local and from afar? In what ways did they blend and reshape these elements to create the glimmering layers of literature that are visible today? Answering these questions will reveal why the literary legacy of Tainan can be considered a steadfast witness to the rise of Taiwan literature in the world.

This exhibition opens a lens into the island's evolving social and political landscapes in six sections, including Humble Beginnings: Brought on the Waves, Nourished by Fertile Island Soils (~1895), Indefatigable Resolve: Dreams and Scars of Cultural Enlightenment (1895~1945), Trial by Fire: Guerilla War against Intellectual Asphyxiation (1945~1980), Democratization: Voices from All Quarters (1980~2000), and Writing our Future … Together. Multimedia displays throughout help visitors interact with, and create new possibilities within, the living stream of Taiwan literature. Find your treasure in this vibrant, flowing stream!

Modernism is a historical phenomenon of great significance in the global history of modern development. Found within is an incredibly rich array of ideas and content.

Taiwan was also involved in this momentous era when modernist beliefs and values transcended borders across the world. Since the 1920s, when the movement was first introduced during the era of Japanese colonial rule, modernism has left its impressions on the intellectual and literary circles of Taiwan. American modernism entered Taiwan via military and economic aid during the Cold War, when the world was divided into two camps. Suppressed by martial law, the trends of post-war Taiwanese literature, arts, and society were led towards modernization by American modernism.
 
To highlight the influence of modernism on the Western world and American literature in particular, the National Museum of Taiwan Literature has organized the special exhibition "Shining Stars of Modernism: American and Taiwan Literature." This exhibition centers on three masters of American modernist literature: F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940), William Faulkner (1897-1962), and Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961). Literary translations published by the United States Information Service (USIS) are used as a channel to introduce the works of these American writers and showcase the qualities of modernist literature in the United States from the 1920s to the 1950s. Exhibited alongside them are modernist works and other historical materials from Taiwan. This juxtaposition illustrates how Taiwanese modernism is both a form of horizontal transplantation, and yet also a movement brimming with a robust spirit of innovation. 

As Taiwanese writers of that era absorbed and collided with the techniques and ideologies of Western modernism, their distinctive qualities created bright literary sparks that would go on to shine like stars in the night sky.

This exhibition is held to celebrate Ông Io̍k-Tek's 100th underground birthday. This exhibition mainly goes through the donated cultural artifacts in the museum's collection. It aims to display Ông Io̍k-Tek's contributions to literature, Taiwanese language studies, Taiwan's democratic movement and other contributions, with extended exhibition areas of Taipei High School and overseas blacklists.
