Introduction

Czechia (the Czech Republic), at the heart of Europe; Taiwan, at the juncture of Asia and the Western Pacific. These two countries, while separated by a distance of over 9,000 kilometers, share similar recent experiences with political repression, turmoil, enforced quiescence, and hard-won peace that have blessed both with similarly strong literary legacies. If your ideas of Czechia center on thoughts of castles, medieval towns, and Prague’s Old Town Square, we invite you to explore an equally interesting, more shadowy side of the country rooted in revolutionary aspirations, displacement and exile, illicit typewriters, and underground periodicals. Discover how contemporary literature in Czechia furtively flourished despite decades of autocratic censorship and blossomed into today’s platform of free and impassioned expression.
