Listening to the Heartbeat of the Land: Hong Xingfu

The Hometown - Erlin

What does Hong Xingfu’s hometown, Erlin, look like under his pen?

Hong Xingfu once described Erlin at the beginning of the novel “Punk”:

“Erlin Township is a small town in the West Central plains of Taiwan that is usually unnoticed. It is located at about 20 kilometers south of the ancient city Lukang. The downtown is only about five kilometers from the nearest coast. Because Taiwan’s Western Line, Provincial Highway 1, and the newly constructed highways don’t pass through here, its development, compared to the other towns on the main lines of transportation, always seems slower... ”

In addition to being Hong Xingfu’s hometown, this town in the southwest corner of Changhua also had the first organized farmer movement in Taiwan. Today, it is still a town dominated by the agricultural population. The history and culture of many places are still waiting to be recognized.

Chia Tshenn Culture Studio is a local organization located in Changhua Erlin that focuses on local agricultural and cultural issues. It has held reading courses based on the theme of Hong Xingfu. It also cooperates with Lai He Cultural Foundation to film the literary landscapes under Hong Xingfu’s pen.
