Listening to the Heartbeat of the Land: Hong Xingfu

Epilogue

Hong Xingfu was born in a poor farming family. His novels portray the daily rural scenery of Taiwan in the 1960s and 1970s in great details, including the industrial transformation of the society, and the pressure to earn a living and struggles of farmers. These novels show his deep concerns for the common people.

An author is a witness and recorder of history. The works of Hong Xingfu lead us back to the time of the transformation of an agricultural society to an industrial and commercial society, paying attention to those who are hidden in the countryside and fighting for a better life. We are reminded to care about the land that nurtures us, and maintain a boldness in saying what we think.

“We are living on this land. If we have the hearts and the ability to care for the people around us and to care for this piece of land, we should talk about it.” ——Hung Hsing-fu “Creative Writing for Novels”
