Singing a Song of the Hometown

Singing a Song of the Hometown

“Folk songs are the easiest to sing and are particularly frank, innocent, pure, and full of ethnic colors, local temperament, and unique rhythm. Each sentence is an expression coming from the bottom of the soul.” – Xu Bingding (“The Reasons I Promote Folk Songs”)

🎵Clinking Coins (丟丟銅)
(Lyricist/ Xu Bingding, Song/ Taiwanese folk song)

When setting both feet in a-yi-do-a-mo-yi-do-diu-ai-yo the Taipei City,
I see the eletronic lights a-yi-do-diu-diu-tong-a-yi-do-a-mo-yi-do-diu-ai-yi-do writing words in red.

A stranger in a foreign land a-yi-do-a-mo-yi-do-diu-ai-yo doesn’t know where to go,
a black sedan almost a-yi-do-diu-diu-tong-a-yi-do-a-mo-yi-do-diu-ai-yi-do hit me to death.

When I asked where the park was a-yi-do-a-mo-yi-do-diu-ai-yo,
a hokka replied said a-yi-do-diu-diu-tong-a-yi-do-a-mo-yi-do-diu-ai-yi-do ngâi m̄-tî (“I don’t know.”).

A trailer came a-yi-do-a-mo-yi-do-diu-ai-yo to take me there.
When arriving at the park, a-yi-do-diu-diu-tong-a-yi-do-a-mo-yi-do-diu-ai-yi-do I could not find a penny to pay.

The driver opened his mouth a-yi-do-a-mo-yi-do-diu-ai-yo to scold me.
“Having no money in the purse, a-yi-do-diu-diu-tong-a-yi-do-a-mo-yi-do-diu-ai-yi-do why dare you to have a ride.”

“Dear trailerdriver, a-yi-do-a-mo-yi-do-diu-ai-yo don’t mad at me.,
Next year I will return you a-yi-do-diu-diu-tong-a-yi-do-a-mo-yi-do-diu-ai-yi-do both what I owe and the due interest.”

🎵Three Sceneries of Tainan (台南三景)
(Lyricist/ Xu Bingding, Songwriter/ Xu Shi)

Under the Moon in Kanchen, while flowers laugh in the spring light like celebrating the same reunion, I have thousand kinds of regret.

The moon shines on the sorrows and pains of my life, and there is no beautiful island or fairy town for me.

Moon Sister Moon Sister, you are kind-hearted.

Why don’t you help, or hold on a fairer position for me., All you do is always watching from afar.

Plums blossom on the side of the Temple of Lord Zheng.

The trees, three hundred years old. witness Lord Zheng’s ambition left unaccomplished.

However his poor loyalty has not yet vanish, as a plum branch growing to the south is hard to reach to the north.

Plum blossom, plum blossom, your iron-like bones and survive the cold of the frost.

When your flowers are withering, and the spring rains are all around, I know that the tears of the lone vassal are not yet dry.

The tidal sound of Anping, the slowly moving green water, and the sky above the sea - are about to go into the dusk.

Tens of thousands of fishing lights are blinking.

It is the sunset of the Ruins of the Eternal Fortress., famous for this mirage of sadness and loneliness.

The light blows. I pay my respect to Lond Zheng with a paddle, the eyebrow-like moon shines lonelily.

The dusk clouds colors the tree into red, that I doubt it is dyed by the hot blood of the hero, Lord Zheng.
