Palatable Reads: Literature Seasoned with the Flavors of Taiwan

Gout Set Meal

Can too much high-purine food cause gout? No. I said no, don’t talk to me about gout. Plump fresh oysters, autumn crabs filled with brown meat, washed down with a cold beer… gout? Hyperuricemia? Ugh, whatever, let’s just eat and worry about all those later!

 Oyster Omelets 蚵 仔 煎

Put oysters and veggies on the teppan (iron plate) first, then add a scoop of sweet potato flour mixed with water and beat in the eggs. The aroma will fill the room as the steam rises and the oil dances on the plate.

 Crabs 螃 蟹

The fresh water crab that my left hand holds is no match for me. A burrowing creature, it feeds all day to its heart's content. A generous helping of crab meat is put on the plate and both of its claws have been cut off. A whole basket of crabs may contain only a little delicious brown meat. Paired with a glass of yilu, the meat is indescribably delicious. I did not know there would be a chef so skilled at cooking crabs, and he has prepared red pepper and purple ginger to boot.

◖ Lin Zi-quan,“Crab Three”
Quan Tai Shi Volume 29, the period of Japanese rule

Appreciation: Lin Zi-quan of Wufeng (1877-1940) Lin wrote this excerpt during the period of Japanese rule. Come and have some crab! Cut open a crab leg and pull out a piece of firm and juicy meat. Peel away the shell to taste the smooth and rich brown meat. It pairs well with a refreshing glass of wine on the side, and some red pepper and purple ginger to dip it in. No matter how strong the crab may have once been, it is no match for me once it is in my mouth! Ha ha ha!
