Palatable Reads: Literature Seasoned with the Flavors of Taiwan

Authentic Flavors Set Meal

 

Taiwanese aboriginal specialties include all sorts of ingredients, from those flying in the sky, to those swimming in the water, and to those walking on land. The sweetness of sea creatures and the rusticness of mountain game meat, are the concentrated quintessence of Mother Earth. Moreover, the millet wine, brewed with utmost ernesty, is an expression of admiration and gratitude for all of nature's bounties. These specialties are just THAT amazing! Hurry up and try some!

 


 

 

 Fish  魚

 

The Tao don't just eat fish, they taste the grace of the fish swimming in the sea, their beauty, intellect, tenacity, and solidarity.

About the Author:
Syaman Rapongan, a member of the Tao tribe, writes prose and novels. His novels describe the myths and stories of the Tao people, while his prose depicts changes in his way of thinking about the world as a person situated between the societies of Orchid Island and the Taiwan mainland. He details the emotions and connections between a person and his ethnic group, in an attempt to call on Taiwanese aborigines to identify with their own culture. His works include Eyes of the Sky, The Dreams on the Ocean, and Memory of the Ocean Waves etc..

 

 


 


 Millet Wine 小米酒

 

All kinds of books on alcohol and I can't even find one, the ingredients of which: malahtangia, festivals, ordering a drink, worship. Alcohol content: unknown. A scent of "wandering in the mist." Brewed with tribal intuition. A book on "Millet wine."

The student working at the library told me softly: "Go look in the tribal community library!"

About the Author:
Islituan grew up in the Nakahlia tribe in Takkei, Hualien County. He worked as a teacher supporting ethnic education at Zhuoxi Elementary School. His works include Asang tu singqal and Mai-asang Asang Bunun, among others.

 

 


 

 


 Cured Muntjac 山羌醃肉

 

She carefully poured the precious cured muntjac meat from the bamboo tube into a bowl. The peculiar smell of the marinated meat suddenly filled the small ward. Watan sat up, pinched off a piece of the meat, and put it in his mouth, chewing with relish.

Ramuy Aki writes mostly prose and novels. Her novels are written in an unadorned and flowing style. Free from certain restrictions of aboriginal culture, she examines different topics in daily life from a female perspective. She also uses a substantial and meticulous writing style to describe the disparity between the rich and the poor and the changing times.
