SAILING ONTO THE WORLD STAGE:THEMES IN TAIWAN LITERATURE

Taiwan Today

In 1987, martial law was lifted in Taiwan. With the gradual opening of the political environment, various public issues in society bloomed into social movements. In this wave of democratic movements, previously oppressed groups began to speak up. In 1996, Taiwan completed its first-ever direct presidential election, and in 2016, the first female President of Taiwan was elected. In 2019, Taiwan became the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage. The atmosphere of an increasingly open society encourages more people to express themselves. Literary creation and freedom of thought have also flourished in post-martial law Taiwan.

Taiwan's economic development has shifted from household-based OEM manufacturing in the 1960s, to being home to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's biggest semiconductor manufacturer. Taiwan's economic structure has gradually transformed into a high technology and service economy, playing a crucial role in global trade. Although the withdrawal from the UN was a major diplomatic setback, Taiwan has switched focus to economic, medical, literary, artistic, and humanitarian efforts, in order to actively participate in the international community.
